There is an extremely important debate raging in database circles about the
inadequacy of SQL and its failure to implement Ted Codd's relational theory. The
"relational" database industry is actually not relational at all - it is an 'SQL
industry'. Prominent relational advocates like Chris Date talk about 'SQL DBMSs'
and 'SQL vendors' - the implication being that relational theory is still
waiting to be properly implemented through a Truly Relational DBMS.
If that is true then we need to ask about the kind of DBMS technology which the
relational vision requires. If SQL is an inadequate implementation of relational
theory, what would an alternative look like? We need to engage with this new
relational debate and consider whether Ingres could ever become a TRDBMS.
