What Relational DBMSs Could Do...if We Wanted

Relational database technology once promised us some very powerful new ways of managing data, and of developing and delivering applications. Unfortunately, during the 20 years we have spent in pursuit of compliance with the SQL standard, we have completely forgotten what a relational DBMS could be. In this presentation I will review some of the things that a truly relational database management system could do if we wanted it to. I shall make the case that SQL is stifling the relational model, and that its limitations are allowing zany new concepts like OODBMSs and XML "databases" to seem like credible alternatives. Finally I will suggest some features that could be incorporated into Ingres and its related products in future, that would make it vastly more powerful than its competition.

The presentation is in the form of 28 Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 slides, zipped to 182kb and inflating to 240kb.
