Rule-based table partitioning is the most significant enhancement
to Ingres since the multi-threaded server architecture was adopted in Release 6. At
a stroke, it solves all of the most intractable problems of managing very large tables; it
facilitates true parallel query execution, and it is also highly effective at solving some
tricky problems even in small databases. In this presentation I look at some of the
less obvious benefits of partitioning, and also some of the potential pitfalls that need
to be avoided.
