Choosing the Optimal Page Size

For many years Ingres has supported page sizes of up to 64kb.  This gives the DBA the opportunity to tune each table's page size for optimal performance and file size. Unfortunately the decision-making process is complicated and poorly documented.  Furthermore, it turns out that a blanket policy of using a single page size for all the tables in a database can give extremely erratic results.

Do 2kb pages still have any uses?  What is the ideal page size?  Why do some people recommend against using a 4kb default page size?

The presentation is in the form of 18 MS PowerPoint 2003 slides, zipped to 169kb and inflating to 247kb.
