This presentation introduces the notion of a surrogate key, with
illustrations of how surrogate keys are useful. Techniques for generating surrogate keys
in Ingres applications are described, and are analyzed from the point of view of
allocation performance and insertion problems. Techniques for efficiently generating keys
are presented. Variations on the basic surrogate key are developed, including
pseudo-random order keys and verifiable keys.
