This presentation reviews the support for integrity constraints
provided by Ingres 2.6. We look at
the importance of the built-in check, entity, and referential integrity constraints.
Two additional kinds of constraints are introduced, and techniques for implementing
them are illustrated. We then examine the use of all the different types of
constraint to dramatically decrease the size and complexity of application programs.
The use of server-side constraints to facilitate end-user access and rapid response
to changing business requirements is demonstrated. Finally we remark on the massive
performance gains that can be achieved once it is possible to presume that the data are
completely correct.
